Unlocking the Code of Our Health: Why Kristen and I Are Embracing DNA Discovery with TriHealth—and Inviting You to Consider It Too

At WealthWise Financial Group, we talk every day about planning for the future—building security, protecting what matters, and creating a lasting legacy. But true wealth isn’t measured only in dollars and portfolios. It’s also about living the fullest, healthiest life possible so we can enjoy the years ahead with our families and pass on not just financial assets, but a foundation of vitality.

That’s why my wife Kristen and I recently decided to participate in DNA Discovery with TriHealth, the free, voluntary community health research program offered through TriHealth and its precision-health partner Helix in the greater Cincinnati area. We were curious about what our DNA could reveal regarding our traits, ancestry, and—most importantly—insights that might help individualize our healthcare. As a family that already leans on information and data to support our healthspan, this felt like a natural next step. We want to live as fully and healthily as possible, not just for ourselves, but for our children and the legacy we hope to leave them.

Our Personal Motivation

Kristen and I have long believed that knowledge is one of the most powerful tools we have. We’ve used data—lab results, lifestyle tracking, conversations with our doctors—to make informed choices about nutrition, exercise, sleep, and preventive care. Learning that a simple blood sample could unlock genetic information about our risks for certain conditions, as well as optional insights into ancestry and traits (like caffeine sensitivity or sleep patterns), was exciting.

The program returns clinical results about inherited risks for conditions such as hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, Lynch syndrome (linked to colorectal cancer risk), and familial hypercholesterolemia (hereditary high cholesterol that can lead to early heart disease). These results go to both the participant According to TriHealth providers, it opens the door to more personalized, proactive care. Optional Helix account access can also share regional ancestry and select genetic traits.

For us, this wasn’t about fear—it was about our empowerment. Understanding our genetic predispositions allows us to work with our healthcare team to tailor screenings, lifestyle strategies, and preventive measures. It’s another layer of information that may help us have more informed conversations with our healthcare team about out health and well-being, while modeling a thoughtful approach to health four our kids.

Why We Encourage Others (If It Feels Right for You)

We know that decisions about genetic information are deeply personal. Privacy, comfort with data sharing, and individual circumstances all matter. DNA Discovery with TriHealth is completely voluntary, offered at no cost, and does not require health insurance. Participants must be 18 or older. Enrollment involves confirming identity (typically via TriHealth MyChart), providing informed consent, and giving a blood sample at a participating TriHealth lab. Results are generally available within a few weeks, and privacy protections are in place, including safeguards under the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) for health insurance and employment in many cases. The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) generally provides protections regarding the use of genetic information in health insurance and employment; however, GINA’s Protections do not extend to life insurance, disability insurance, or long-term care insurance. Individuals should consider the potential implications of genetic testing and consult appropriate professionals before participating.
